Kings Art Center - Growing amidst challenges.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the community of Kings County has proven that art matters! As soon as businesses and organizations were being closed down in March, the Kings Art Center began to pivot its operations to meet the changing needs of our community. We engaged our teachers in online art tutorials, our artists in providing social media demonstrations, and our volunteer social media coordinator in creating video gallery tours.During the summer months, our children’s classes were able to relaunch and have continued through the fall distance learning season with COVID protected in-person art classes. And guess what. Kings County showed up.

Our social media offerings are performing better than ever. Our children’s art classes, with social distancing limitations, are near capacity. And, our upcoming Winter Show – exhibiting works by local artists is filled to the brim and ready for online tours and gallery visits.(Gallery visits may be curtailed if state and local guidelines change due to increasing COVID-19 infection rates.) The demand for our services during challenging times shows that art is essential.

In amazing unity, members of Kings County came together to support the Art Center with financial support. The Gala Lite (a stay home affair), the Travelling Flamingoes, and direct donations all worked together to support the Art Center’s work when our normal fundraising activities were not possible.Wow!We are grateful.

Because we came through 2020, on mission and standing on solid ground, we are able to press forward with our objectives for 2021 and 2022.I’m excited to let you know that a mural project is underway at the Art Center, to install public art on temporary panels to be regularly placed on walls facing Eleventh Street and a permanent mural in the Sharp-Porterfield Courtyard. Our children’s program will expand to include a satellite program in Armona. And, progress on our facilities improvements and upgrades continues with new signage, bathroom upgrades, reroofing, and courtyard refurbishment.

All of this because art is essential!
